Dwelling House Louis Jacobi

Louis Jacobi, born in 1836, is considered one of the main architects of the development of Homburg during the flourishing of the spa business, thanks to the many public and private buildings he designed. The son of a landgrave’s chamberlain went to relatives in America in 1850, where he gained experience in many different professions in Buffalo until 1856. After he returned, he studied architecture at the Polytechnic School in Karlsruhe from 1857 until 1860. In 1861, he settled in Homburg as an architect and took over managing the construction of the Zweites Kurhaus (Second Kurhaus Spa), designed by Belgian architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar, until 1863. This prestigious building was followed by further commissions that characterize the city: 1869-1871, the Landgrafendenkmal (Landgrave Memorial); 1887-1890, the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Bad (Emperor Wilhelm Spa); 1906, renovation of the Orangerie (orangery grove); 1907, the Marktlauben (market arcades); 1908, the Brunnenversand (spring water shipment) building; 1909-1911, the Russisches Pfarrhaus (Russian parsonage); 1910, the temple for the Auguste-Viktoria-Brunnen spring; and 1910-11, the Herzbergturm (Herzberg Tower), which however was not finished until after his death. In 1896-1899, he also managed construction for the Russian Chapel. As for private buildings, he designed the Duché House, built in 1863, the later Dr. Lommel Sanatorium, the 1885 studio building for Voigt the photographer, and the extensions for Ritter’s Park-Hotel (1909-10). He also achieved further fame with the reconstruction of the ancient Roman fort, the Saalburg, which was begun at his initiative.
