The First Kurhaus spa was built from 1841 to 1843 at the current location on Louisenstraße based on the design by the French architect and Munich architectural advisor Jean Baptiste Métivier. Leading up to that was a contract between Landgrave Philipp and the French entrepreneurs François and Louis Blanc, which, for the concession of a casino, stipulated the construction of a spa with a restaurant, ballroom and terrace as well as an English-garden style park. The new construction started a boom, which had wide-reaching consequences on the development of the city. The increasing number of visitors made expansion necessary between 1847 and 1852, which was carried out by adding two wings designed by architect Jean Pierre Cluysenaar from Brussels. A fire in 1860 caused severe damage, which meant that more sections could be integrated into the new buildings of the Second Kurhaus spa in 1861-63.
