Hydrotherapy Institution of Dr. Hünerfauth (Kaltwasserheilanstalt)

As a result of the Franco-Prussian War, Dr. Wilhelm Zimmermann moved the Paris gymnastic-orthopedic institute he directed starting in 1863 to Homburg, to which was added a hydropathic facility in 1864. In the small print describing what his practice offered, he wrote “orthopedic, medical-gymnastic, and water healing facility”. Guests could practice exercises on gymnastic apparatuses in a well-ventilated hall, and anyone who preferred a more private setting could use a smaller private salon. The spa baths included full baths (flow or wave baths, depending on the amount of water fed in), half baths, hip baths, so-called Scottish hip baths (alternating cold and warm water), rubdowns, washes, pouring water, damp wraps, wet wraps, sweat baths, steam baths, rain showers, dust showers, wave showers and jet showers, horizontal showers, upward jet and rain showers; all in combination with whey or drinking water treatments. These are all treatments for illnesses such as obesity, hypochondria, hemorrhoids, iodine and mercury poisoning, stomach and intestinal catarrh, liver and spleen swelling, gynecological diseases, muscle weakness, hysteria and nervous heart disorders. One personal specialization was however diseases of the motor system (scoliosis, joint diseases, stiff neck, etc.), which were treated with “Swedish therapeutic gymnastics” and cold showers. In October 1879, ownership of the medicinal water facility went to spa physician Dr. Georg Hünerfauth, who was still listed in the address book at Dorotheenstraße 45 until 1886 and who described himself as the owner of the establishment in his manuscript “History of Massage” that same year. In 1894 at the latest, Dr. Hans Leber took over the facility, which he continued to develop into a health facility for massage, electrotherapy and therapeutic gymnastics. He was still listed in the address book as the owner in 1900. The address book of 1916 no longer lists the hydropathic facility. There was however a Dr. Hünerfauth again at the Dorotheenstraße 45 address.
