English Garden

The English Garden, which adjoins the Schlosspark, first belonged to Karoline, the wife of Landgrave Friedrich V. The design was planned around 1820 but not carried out. It was her daughter-in-law Elisabeth who first began the project in 1822, designing the park in the style of an English landscape garden. The “Carolinenbrücke” (Caroline Bridge), originally called the “Weiße Brücke” (White Bridge) and built in 1820, still refers to the actual owner. When the house of the Landgrave died out in 1866, Marie Blanc, the wife of the casino leasee, acquired the property. After her death, it first went to the Frankfurt entrepreneur family von Brüning in 1882, before it was acquired in 1919 by Prince Adalbert of Prussia, a son of Emperor Wilhelm II. When he died in 1948, the city assumed the area and gave permission for development. However, the old tree population, documented in a park map and entered as a natural monument in 1966, was also supposed to be maintained The Caroline Bridge was renovated in 2011 based on historical records.
