Dr. Wilhelm Deetz (1827-1899), born in Breslau (then Prussia, now Wrocław, Poland), was a Prussian military physician before he was appointed in 1858 as the successor of medical advisor Dr. Christian Trapp, who died in 1854. As the new official physician, he not only took over direction of the hospital, but also acted as medical advisor and spring/spa physician for the spa business. Deetz quickly revealed himself as an aggressive, eloquent critic of the casino and the comforts of the social spas and luxury baths, as can be seen in his memorandum published in 1859. In it, he called for setting up an overarching health authority as a governing body, expanding existing institutions, and creating new treatment facilities. He promoted peat baths, the Gasbad gas spa, the whey institute and even baths for the poor, which however never come to fruition. After annexation by Prussia, Deetz kept his position and was appointed district physician in 1887. Until his death in 1899, he advocated for the medical and therapeutic facilities in Homburg.
