The building, which was originally built as a residence for Chamber Commissioner Chevalier in 1829, was opened as the first spa hotel “Englischer Hof” in 1839 by Casimir Brambier and Adam Maillard. The increasing number of visitors made it necessary to start construction at no. 64a in 1841. Nonetheless, this was still not enough space, and the hotel moved to Louisenstraße 98 in 1864. The building repeatedly found itself being used for different purposes. From 1872, Louisenstraße 64a housed the Café Brahe, and the Schick publishing house was on the ground floor of Louisenstraße 64 from 1883.
