Scherer’s Steam Laundry
The Scherer family lived in the house at Hinter den Rahmen 22 beginning in 1878. The address book of that year mentions “Christ. Scherer”, the widow of steam-wash businessman Franz Scherer. The enormous demand the hotels and spas placed on professional washing and cleaning led to the professionalization of the washing industry. Steam washes developed gradually from the simple washhouses and made it possible to manage huge amounts of laundry more easily. Around 1886, Franz Scherer ran the business, and he was still listed as the owner in the address book of 1900. In 1916, his widow was continuing to run the business.
