The hotel, which was built in 1870s and opened in 1880, was located across from the Englische Kirche (English Church). It was initially operated as a spa villa under the name “Maison Scheller”, in 1889 as the “Family Hotel Scheller”, and only in 1894 did it receive the name “Hotel Metropole”. It is likely that during this time the two buildings, no. 19 and 21, were merged. In 1921 and 1922, the Israeli writer Chaim Nachman Bialik lived here with his family.
