The first thoughts given to wide-ranging electrical coverage in Homburg were already made by the magistrate in 1892, but due to the existing gasworks, nothing was done about it. However, the August Metzger machine factory area (Höhestraße 10), bounded by the Höhestraße, Castillostraße and Gymnasiumstraße roads, was supplied with electricity. In 1896, the contract was drawn up with Frankfurt company Lahmeyer for the construction of a direct-current (DC) electrical power plant, which was implemented a year later. The city expected the hotels to be better powered and the spa business to become more attractive. The introduction of the streetcar in 1899, which was also powered by the electrical power plant, can be seen in a similar context. When Bad Homburg switched to alternating current (AC) in 1956, the plant lost its original function. It served as a transformer and switch station until the landmarked building was converted into a youth center in 1980.
