The casino company had the gasworks built in 1858. This was to improve the safety and quality of life in the city, especially the insufficient lighting in public areas, and thus support the region's spa business. The illumination was free for the city and the Kurhaus spa. Only private users were required to pay. Nonetheless, demand grew so rapidly by 1867 that the capacity of the gas containers, 600 m³ at the time, had to be increased by another 1200 m³. When the city as a whole could be supplied with electricity by the electrical power plant built in 1897, the gasworks became much less important.
