The Doric temple was built in 1829-30 at the behest of Prince and later Landgrave Gustav and was used as a teahouse and pavilion. It seems to have been the final step of the Gustavsgarten, which had been systematically laid out starting in 1822 and was the most important of the so-called Prinzengärten (Princes’ Gardens). After Gustav died in 1848 and the landgrave’s house died out in 1866, the Frankfurt banker Wertheimber bought it in 1898 and made the garden part of his villa estate.
