Hermann Corrodi (1844-1905) was born in Frascati, Italy, the son of Swiss painter Salomon Corrodi. He received early artistic training from his father, and beginning in 1866, he studied at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Extended travels to Constantinople, Syria, Egypt, and Montenegro influenced his paintings, which had previously depicted mainly Roman panoramas and were now primarily of Middle Eastern landscapes. For this reason, he was soon considered “one of the most brilliant depicters of the Middle East” (Thieme / Becker p. 469). Corrodi spent many summers in Baden-Baden and Homburg, where he made connections with the English royal household and the German Imperial House, who became part of his clientele. The address book of 1900 recorded his address at the Kurhaus spa.
