The opening of the Eisenbahn Hotel was closely related to the construction of the Alter Bahnhof (Old Train Station) in 1860. Located directly across from station, the hotel served primarily as accommodation for travelers just making a stop and as a quick rest stop for hotel pages, servants and porters, who awaited the arrival of spa guests. When the new train station was built in another location in 1907, the hotel lost this primary function. Nonetheless, city events, like the annual Lantern Festival, also brought in guests during the 20th century. The hotel only ceased operations at the end of the 1970s, and in the fall of 1980, the Bayerische Hypothekenbank (Bavarian Hypothekenbank, now Hypo-Vereinsbank / HypoVereinsbank) moved into the building.
