Castle Gardens

The beginnings of the Schlosspark palace park can be traced back to the 15th century, although few details are known about this medieval garden. The first impressions can be seen in the city view by Matthäus Merian from 1646, which depicts a Renaissance-style vegetable and tree garden. With the construction of the Landgrafenschloss (Landgrave Palace), the low-lying, water-rich area and the slope were also included in the design around the end of the 17th century. Paul Andrich, the master architect of the palace, instead of a kitchen garden, designed a “Dutch-style” parterre with a fountain as a pleasure garden. This opened up to the hillside with a vineyard and ponds in the valley below. Around 1770, Friedrich V and his wife Karoline had the stately garden converted into an English-style pleasure garden with rococo bosquets on the hillside and winding paths. Their artistic garden activities also reached other gardens, so that the Schlosspark palace park became the starting point of the Landgrave’s garden landscape with the Prinzengärten (Prince’s Gardens) along the Tannenwaldallee Road. Friedrich VI and Elizabeth continued these efforts and developed the areas with a forest and deer garden. Elizabeth was also the one who, in 1820, had the imposing Lebanese cedars from the Kew Gardens in London planted on the garden level.
