In the mid-1860s, the cantor and kosher butcher of the Jewish community, Abraham Braunschweig, opened a hotel with a restaurant that offered completely kosher cuisine. In 1884, he passed the business on to his son Julius, who later became a city councilor and chairman of the Jewish community. With its kosher restaurant, the hotel was especially popular with Jewish spa guests.
