In 1886, considerations on the location of an impressive post office were initiated, because the post office at Louisenstraße 70 was no longer up to the task of dealing with the increasing number of letters and packages coming through. In 1889, the Imperial Postal Administration acquired the Louisenstraße 65 property and the Hotel Europäischer Hof, which was located on the property and torn down in 1890. The new building was under construction from 1891 to 1893 and architecturally resembled the Kurhaus spa across from it. The “Imperial Post Office” opened on 13 May 1893. The number of employees increased steadily over the next several decades. In 1945, the building was badly damaged by air raids but was rebuilt and used as a post office until 1972.
