Regional State Bank

In 1849, the Landgrave government, in cooperation with Frankfurt banker Amschel Mayer von Rothschild, tried to issue paper money, which was not successful. In 1854, Landgrave Ferdinand granted a concession to the Frankfurt banker Raphael Erlanger to found a note-issuing bank. Erlanger took over the deposit and lending institution, which had existed since 1844 and had a very attractive client base with the guests of the casino. The company started operations in 1855 with a capital of 1 million guilders. After Hesse-Homburg fell to Prussia in 1866, the volume of banknotes initially increased dramatically, but in 1875, the bank was forced to give up its privileges as a note-issuing bank. Operations continued as a commercial bank and subsidiary of the Frankfurt bank of Erlanger & Sons. In 1904, Bankhaus Erlanger obtained Dresdner Bank, and in 1929, the Homburg bank fused with Dresdner Bank.
