Hotel “Kaiserlicher Hof”, also known as “Hotel Imperial”, opened in 1854. It was one of the early hotels founded during the spa period in Bad Homburg. In 1865, Gustav Weigand took over the hotel and named it the “Hotel Victoria” or the “Royal Hotel Victoria”, it was especially beloved by the English spa guests. In addition to the hotel, Weigand ran a flourishing business exporting Rhine wine to England. In 1896, he sold the hotel to Jean Baehl and bequeathed the city 100,000 marks to expand its spa facilities. At the beginning of July 1911, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes novels, stayed at Hotel Victoria while he took part in the Prince Heinrich automobile tour. In the 1960s, the Hertie department store chain acquired the property and replaced the hotel with a new department store building in 1966-68.
