Villa von Marx

In the summer of 1890, Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade (Emperor Friedrich Boulevard) was extended to the Galgenhohl (Gallows Hollow), today's Friesenstraße Road. A short time later, Adolf Baumbach, who also owned the neighboring Villa Royale, sold the villa property at address no. 113 to Heinrich Thomas and his wife Ida Thekla, née Souchay. After acquiring other properties, the entire property received address no. 111. Seven years later, the Thomases sold the villa to then Government Assessor Ernst Ritter von Marx, who had already received permission from the planning authorities responsible to make structural changes. In the rear section of the property, a service building was erected, which had a stall and a shed as well as a laundry room, an ironing room, and living space for employees (including two lavatories). Ritter von Marx was appointed head mayor of Bad Homburg in 1901; from 1904 until 1914 and from 1918 until 1921, he was state councilor of the Obertaunus district. The greatest effect he had was on city planning. With his publication “Auf zum Taunus” (Let's go to Taunus), he made decisions which still have an effect on the layout of the Vordertaunus region today. This project left its marks on the city's topography with the Ritter-von-Marx Bridge: This was the first flyover in Europe, built in 1905. It spans the old city and thus leads traffic directly from Louisenstraße Road onto the avenue toward Dornholzhausen.
