The “Orangerie” orange tree grove was built in 1844 not far from the Elisabethenbrunnen spring. It was originally the winter quarters for forty orange trees that Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse had to leave with the Blanc brothers, the casino operators, to pay off his gambling debts. When winter spa visits became fashionable, the building was used as a “madeira house”, which housed exotic plants. Staying near the plants was considered to have a healing effect. In 1906, the architect Louis Jacobi was commissioned to convert the Orangerie into a lobby, which was carried out in 1909. The building was subsequently renovated and, beginning in 1971, was used as a multifunctional spa center with a spring water distribution bar, café and a concert hall.
