The Russian Chapel was built according to the designs of the St. Petersburg architect Louis Benois, who was active in Darmstadt at the same time, and building was supervised by Louis Jacobi between 1896 and 1899. Due to the increase in the number of Russian spa guests beginning the early 1890s, which had declined following the closure of the casino in 1872, the Russian State Councilor Alexander Provorov is probably the one who took the initiative to build and finance the Russian Orthodox Chapel. Tsar Nicholas II, who was staying in Darmstadt at the time, took part in the ceremony laying the foundation stone in fall 1896. The dedication ceremony took place in the autumn of 1899 with the participation of Grand Duke Alexei, an uncle of the Tsar, and Victoria, the mother of Emperor Wilhelm II.
