Beginning in 1878, the Kranz family lived in the house on Thomasstraße Road, at the time Thomasgasse 6. They originally pursued their trade as tailors, which is documented for Jacob Kranz in 1878 and for Wilhelm Kranz in 1881 and 1886. Selling and renting bicycles, which is first documented in the address book of 1900, seems to have been started by Wilhelm Kranz in the 1890s. Before the First World War, bicycles became not only a modern mode of personal transportation, but cycling was also considered a healthy leisure time activity, starting in England. Bicycle shops and rentals were thus a part of the infrastructure of the spa regions.
