At the turn of the 20th century, sculptor Fritz Gerth created many sculptures that characterize the city, commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II and others: the memorial for Landgravine Elisabeth, which was dedicated in 1908 in the presence of King Edward VII; the Landgrafendenkmal (Landgrave Memorial) in the Kurpark in 1906; and the memorial of Emperor Wilhelm I unveiled on the occasion of the Kaisermanöver military exercises in 1905. At the end of 1889, the sculptor built a studio in the Kurpark, which was located in the Brunnensälchen (Small Spring Room) according to the address books of 1900 and 1916.
