Ludwigs Fountain (Oberer Brunnen)

The Ludwigsbrunnen spring kicked off the spa business in Homburg. The spring, which was tapped in 1809/10 and known as the “Upper Spring” or “Salt Spring”, was originally surrounded by a double-ring of Italian fastigiate black poplars. Since about 1810, the water from the Ludwigsbrunnen spring has been sold and shipped as mineral water. In 1835, the spring was built upon with a structure consisting of octogonally arranged sandstone posts connected with cast iron grates. In 1871, a grotto was built across from the staircase, which however disappeared when the spring was raised. The shallow location of the spring meant that many new holes and taps had to be drilled.
