The obelisk made of Wertheim sandstone was made by Frankfurt municipal architect J. F. C. Heß in 1818-19 at the behest of Crown Prince Friedrich Joseph on the occasion of the golden anniversary of his parents, Friedrich V and Caroline. It was originally designed for the intersection of the Kreuzallee and Mittelstedter Weg roads as the center of a small park. This plan however did not come to fruition, and the obelisk was erected on the Obeliskenschneise path on the Sangeberg mountain in 1825.
