Around 1888 once the Old Hospital was no longer sufficient for the continually growing population, the magistrate, in agreement with the local Commission for the Poor, decided in 1899 to build a new hospital on the Rennäcker fields on Taunusstraße Road (today Urseler Straße), for medical as well as hygienic reasons. The initiative for this came from district physician and the director of the Old Hospital, Dr. Wilhelm Deetz. Earth works only began at the end of 1902 however, because Empress Auguste did not approve of the hospital being in such close proximity to the palace, and she long delayed giving her approval. At the opening in 1904, the hospital had 72 beds. Increasing demand made it necessary to build extensions in the 1940s and 1960s (building A in 1941, building C in 1961, and building B in 1966), which raised the number of beds to 564. These were not only renovations and modernizations, but various medical departments were also formed around specializations. This was accompanied by the eventual demolition of the section built in 1904, which had aged in the meantime. It was replaced by new buildings from 1963 to 1971. Today, the institution now known as the “District Hospital” has 603 beds and 980 employees, including 90 doctors.
