Air- and Sunbath

In the last decades of the 19th century, air bathing and sunbathing became more and more common as therapeutic applications. After the Danish physician Niels Ryberg Finsen won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1903 for his investigations into heliotherapy, they soon became part of the common therapy options at the spas. In Homburg, an air bathing and sunbathing area was opened in the Röderwiesen Park in the district of Dornholzhausen in 1908, which is still indicated by the current street name “Altes Sonnenbad” (Old Sunbath). It was supported by followers of the Lebensreform (life reform) movement and Freikörperkultur (FKK – naturism/nudism) and supported by the health food shop Reformhaus Freya in Frankfurt as well as by the ORPLID Association. It was considered one of the first and most beautiful FKK naturist facilities in Germany.
