Leopold’s Stone

The Leopoldstein, an urn on top of a cubic base surrounded by oak leaves, was dedicated, like the Leopold Bridge, to the memory of Prince Leopold, who fell in the war of liberation against Napoleon in 1813. Commissioned by Landgravine Elisabeth to be hewn by the Frankfurt sculptor Johann Valentin Tüchert, the memorial was set up on the Elisabethenschneise path in 1825. The gradual weathering of the monument was the cause for moving it to the Schlossgarten (Palace Garden) in 1972.
