Landgraves' Column

The Landgrave Column - a mottled sandstone column standing on a stepped base crowned by a sphere - was originally on the right side in front of the palace entrance, built for the 50-year anniversary of Landgrave Friedrich V’s ascension to the throne and dedicated on 30 January 1816. In 1835, his son Landgrave Ludwig had the column moved from its original location in the Schlossgarten (Palace Garden) to the Großer Tannenwald (Great Fir Forest). It was restored in 1967 after being weathered over the years. In 1988, it was returned to the Schlossgarten, and a copy was later erected in the Großer Tannenwald.
