Chemical Pharmaceutical Company

In contrast to many other Homburg companies, which mainly came out of commercial operations, the pharmaceutical company Chemisch-Pharmazeutische Werke Bad Homburg AG has been a public limited company since its founding. With a capital base of 1 million marks, it was concerned with the production and sales of medicines and compounds as well as raw products and chemicals that mainly came from extracts from the medicinal springs. This included bonbons made of malt extract, peppermint balls, mineral lozenges, catarrh caramel, Homburg salt, and laxative tablets made of water extracted from the Elisabethenbrunnen Spring. Later, the product range was expanded to include domestic medicinal herbs, including “Kamillosan”, a chamomile compound with many different applications, which is still the most well-known today. In 1923, the company was expanded by acquiring the Scheller Citrovin factory at Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade 12, which produced table and pickling vinegars. The collapse of the spa business after the First World War hit the company hard, but it was able to maintain its position in the market. In 1927, due to the lack of opportunities to expand in Bad Homburg it was moved to Frankfurt.
