The Taunus Sanatorium, founded in 1911 by the physician Siegfried Goldschmidt, was located on the edge of the Hardtwald forest. It primarily focused on Jewish spa guests, as indicated by the kosher catering and the opening of its own synagogue in 1928. After the death of Dr. Goldschmidt in 1926, Dr. Joshua O. Leibowitz took over the business. He managed it until 1937, after which he had to emigrate to Palestine. The sanatorium initially housed the central school of the Reichsbahn railway, and after the occupation by US troops, it housed the financial administration authority of the American-British Bizone starting in 1947. The current German Federal Equalization Office (Bundesausgleichsamt) emerged from this in 1952 and used the building until 1998. Since then, the building has stood empty, and in 2008, the District of Hochtaunus purchased it in order to provide space for an extension of the nearby high school. The controversial handling of monument preservation measures meant that the main building was not listed as a landmark until 2016. Future use is uncertain.
