Sanatorium of Dr. Baumstark

The physician Robert Baumstark opened his sanatorium in an idyllic location in the Hardtwald forest in 1911. The facility, which was financed exclusively by the physician’s own funds, initially offered space for 50 patients. After the doctor's death in 1935, management passed to the newly founded “Sanatorium Dr. Baumstark GmbH”, in which the city, the Kur-AG spa corporation and the Obertaunus district, among others, were involved. In 1945, the state welfare association took over the building and, by order of the American occupation forces, housed 105 women suffering from tuberculosis. Only after the currency reform in 1948 did the city and the Kur-AG spa corporation succeed in acquiring the majority of the shares and terminating the occupancy contract with the state welfare association. In 1956, the supervisory board decided to open up the previously private house to social security recipients and began with the liberal renovations. Further modernization took place in 1967 and increasingly often in the 1970s. While the 1980s brought a slump in the occupancy rate due to cutbacks in the social security system, a shift in emphasis to prevention and rehabilitation brought a turnaround beginning in 1990.
