In the place of the traditional Hotel Minerva, which was torn down in 1965, the new building of the Hotel Ambassador was supposed to be constructed in 1968. However, because of the developer’s inability to finance the operations, only the first section was finished. In 1970, the court initiated foreclosure proceedings and set a date for auction. Several days before this date, the entrepreneur Werner Wicker assumed the construction with all its liabilities. The necessary renovations were undertaken since he wanted to build a sanatorium instead of a hotel. The building opened in 1972 and was extended and expanded between 1973 and 1975 by acquiring neighboring properties. Its specialization in rheumatology led to the facility being upgraded from a sanatorium to a clinic in 1979.
