The origins of the Kurpark spa park go back to the year 1842. That was when the “Kurhausgarten” or “Kurgarten” (spa garden/park), a small park area extending from the Kurhaus terrace, was built according to the designs of the Düsseldorf garden director Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe. Extending further to the north, beginning in 1854-55 a landscape park was created in the English style according to the plans drawn up by garden director Peter Josef Lenné, who also included the area of the spring. In 1857 and 1867, successive expansions out to the Hardtwald forest were carried out under the direction of Frankfurt garden architect Heinrich Siesmayer, whose company was also entrusted with care and maintenance of the park. Since the 1870s, people have played sports in the Kurpark spa park, initiated and promoted by the many English spa guests. At first, guests played lawn tennis in the park meadow, and in 1876, the first tennis club was founded on the European mainland. A golf course was built in 1889; the golf club was then founded in 1899. Both of these made significant contributions to the appearance of the park. The last expansion of the park happened in 1913-14, when the jubilee park celebrating Emperor Wilhelm II’s 25 years on the throne was designed by Philipp Siesmayer.
